Unlock Focus. Lock Out Distractions.

Did you know?

Out of all recorded age groups, College students rank the highest in addiction to social media.  21% of college students become restless when unable to access social media.

For this project I have focused on researching the subtle side-effects of social media on college athletes. I conducted experiments and surveys to gain insights from professional student athletes on how social media affects their athletic lifestyle.

I first ran a survey on 50 athletes that analyzed the athletes screen time, mindset, and type of social media they consume. I then conducted an experiment to assess whether a temporary absence from social media could positively influence athletic performance and mindset.

These results suggests that social media has the ability to zap energy and negatively affect the mindset of athletes.

How are companies solving this problem?

Some companies use a physical barrier to block social media. Using a tag or keychain to unlock selected apps complicates the habit, making the person more aware of the addiction.

Install Application

Other companies use screen time apps. Although apps are easy to install, they can be easily bypassed, which is why I decided to combine these two methods into one.

Ideation

I designed a solution to help athletes reduce social media addiction. It uses a system that combines a physical key fob with an app. After downloading the app and syncing it with your phone, selected apps (such as social media) become locked and can only be unlocked when touched to the key fob.

This app pairs with the key fob device and blocks selected media of the users choosing. Here, athletes can track their progress and saved time.
