The New Age Microphone
CAD Exercise
Aimed to develop a stage microphone that bridges the timeless appeal of vintage design with the sophistication of modern minimalism. The project explored how form, materiality, and detailing could evoke nostalgia while maintaining a clean, contemporary identity suited for today’s performance environments.
Duration: 2 weeks
Software used: Rhino, Adobe
Began the project with rapid ideation sketches that combined classic microphone forms with modern design language.
Reintroduced the iconic metal grille of vintage microphones while maintaining the portability and streamlined form of contemporary models.
Materials used: plastic, copper, aluminum, and an integrated circuit board.
Components: bottom cap, main housing, circuit board housing, slider switch, microphone element, and top mesh grille.
Integrated a sliding power switch with a green indicator light, selected over a conventional button to prevent accidental shutoffs caused by hand placement during performance.
The design is powered by two AA batteries housed at the base of the handle, allowing for easy replacement and enhanced portability without reliance on external cables.
